Dewey: Cuts to Balance Budget

DEWEY BEACH – The town manager of Dewey Beach says some things had to be sacrificed to balance the budget.

Dewey Beach Town Manager Gordon Elliott says several seasonal jobs had to be cut, and several fees had to be raised, to balance the $2.1 million budget.

The budget eliminates 14 lifeguard and 10 seasonal police officer positions, slashing the funding for the two departments by $100,000.

Also included in the budget a $30 increase for parking violations, $10 hike for dog licenses and a surcharge on fines for public intoxication and other alcohol-related offenses. The cost of making a copy in town will rise as well, from 50 cents to $1.

With these changes, Elliott expects a $40,000 surplus.
