DEWEY BEACH — Through its first season in business, Scrap’s Beach House Bar & Grill was riding the coattails of the long-established Dewey Beach Club, which previously occupied the Route 1 establishment.
But now, with Executive Chef Inton Mouynivong on board, the restaurant has started serving Thai cuisine and could soon assume a whole new identity.
“It’s what I was exposed to and what I’ve been eating all my life,” said Mouynivong, who recently started working at Scrap’s after spending time at Steakhouse 26 in Millville. “I’m hoping to bring something different and good to Dewey.” According to General Manager Mitch King, Thai cuisine is new to the town.
“(Thai) definitely came with Inton,” he said. “His Thai is phenomenal; it’s got a great blend of flavors. He puts love in his food.”
Prior to Mouynivong’s arrival at Scrap’s, the restaurant primarily stuck with popular beach eats such as barbecue ribs, fried chicken, meat loaf, pork chops and burgers.
While burgers remain on the menu to appeal to the regulars and those looking for a traditional American-style meal, most of the menu now features original Thai recipes.
King said the Pad Thai entrée is easily one of the new menu’s top sellers. The dish features stir-fried rice noodles, chicken, shrimp and vegetables with authentic Thai seasoning. It’s finished with cilantro and bean sprouts. The $16 dish is also available with tofu for vegetarians.
Mouynivong has also brought a handful of Thai appetizers, including pork spring rolls and Asian pot stickers. Some favorites still remain from the Dewey Beach Club though, such as grouper and conch fingers.
Even though the menu has changed, Mouynivong said he’s confident the establishment will see continued success.
“I started on my own a few years ago with Thai,” he said. “I’m just bringing all my experience together.”
