Town Gets Tough On Unpaid Parking Fines

DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) _ Dewey Beach is hoping aggressive collection of unpaid parking fines will help reduce a projected budget gap.

Mayor Dell Tush says the town is facing a projected $700,000 budget shortfall and can use every dollar it can get.

Town manager Gordon Elliott says the town has more than $200,000 in unpaid fines from this year alone. He says the town has already sent unpaid fines from 2005, 2006 and 2007 to a collection agency and expects to collect about two-thirds of that money.

Elliott says he’s preparing to ask department heads to begin scaling back on their individual budgets to help close the gap.
